Haligonian Russell Hubley, a Second World War veteran involved in the 1944 campaign to liberate France
from Nazi rule, has joined other foreigners who’ve been awarded the French Legion of Honour.

France’s consul general to the Atlantic provinces presented his country’s highest decoration to Hubley on
Friday during a ceremony at 12 Wing Shearwater.

The former airman was a member o f the Canadian military when Allied Forces stormed French beaches
on D-Day, 70 years ago, and later pushed inland during an effective operation to free France from German
control.

For his military contribution , and in recognition of Hubley’s civilian life following the end o f the war in
1945, a grateful France delivered an honour that’s existed since the early 1800s. The ceremony took place
in the Shearwater Aviation Museum



Distinguished Flying Cross - No.405 Squadron

Award effective 10 May 1945 as per London Gazette dated 22 May 1945 and AFRO 1147/45 dated 13 July 1945.
Enlisted in Halifax, 20 August 1942. Trained at No.9 BGS (graduated 25 June 1943). No citation other than
"completed... numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which [he has] invariably displayed the
utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty". Public Records Office Air 2/9070 has recommendation dated 20
February 1945 when he had flown 45 sorties (196 hours eight minutes), 21 May 1944 to 14 February 1945.

"Pilot Officer Hubley has successfully completed 45 operational sorties directed at the most heavily defended
enemy targets, including Wanne Eickel, Gelsenkirchen, Stuttgart and Dortmund. In all these attacks, Pilot
Officer Hubley has shown extreme devotion to duty, and has not faltered even in the most difficult positions. His
courage and skill as an Air Gunner has made this officer an excellent example, not only to his crew but to all Air
Gunners of this squadron."
